GIRLS & DRUMS

[photo of Krista by me, you can tell by the thumb]

As you may know, I am all about women & girls playing music. That's why I've written about Tom Tom Magazine: A Magazine for Female Drummers, and that's why I've written about lots of my girl friends who play music. So, combine the two and you get my dream article.

Debuted this evening in Tom Tom: Angie, my current bandmate (in an of yet unnamed project, and also, Cheeky), interviews Krista, my past bandmate (in Carnal Knowledge)! And Maggie, current drummer of Scantron [who I just saw the other day for the first time and damn! Girl can play the dance beats!] took photos of the whole thing. Angie asks a lot of great questions, and Krista covered so much about the feminist music scene in New York, while also detailing experiences of sexism. It really gives a full picture of what it's like to be a woman playing music and all the things, especially the challenges, that come along with that.

It's a good day for women drummers, and especially, yours truly (not a drummer -- yet).

The NYC Dyke March is a protest march to demonstrate for lesbian rights and visibility within the larger LGBT community. The reason for the creation of the various Dyke Marches was to protest what many women saw as the control of Gay Pride events by white gay men at the expense of lesbians in general and women of color in particular. Many of the organizers were also concerned that New York's Gay Pride March was losing its political edge as it became more accepted by the city and courted by corporations. This illegal protest march steps off on Saturday, June 27th at 5PM sharp at 42nd and Bryant Park, marches down 5th ave and ends at Washington Square Park.

CARNAL KNOWLEDGE ADDED TO D4 SHOW

[poster by Black & Red Eye]

WE JUST GOT ADDED TO THIS SHOW TOMORROW NIGHT!

"mornin New Yorkers...

TONITE is the nite!

DILLINGER 4's record release party @ a brand new venue, the DANBRO STUDIOS WAREHOUSE !

DANBRO is a gorgeous, mid-1800's vintage, raw warehouse space in the East Williamsburg Industrial Park. Shows happen in an ancient, dramatic vaulted room that used to house stores of grain for the building's original incarnation: the Goldenrod Brewery, a once famous Brooklyn brewery that folded after the 1930s due to Prohibition.

Just look for the landmark smokestack that reads "VD 1858" - the bands play next to the base of that stack! Right around the corner from the Montrose L stop.

[ DILLINGER 4 ]
"Dillinger Four is an influential American punk rock band based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Formed in 1994. Current members are Lane "Monkey Hustle" Pederson (drums), Billy Morissette (guitar, vocals), Erik Funk (guitar, vocals), and Patrick "St. Paddy" Costello (bass, vocals.) Funk co-owns the Triple Rock Social Club, a popular bar and music venue in Minneapolis." - Wikipedia
-- MYSPACE / MP3s --> http://myspace.com/dillingerfour

[ THE ERGS ]
grungy pop punk infused with a healthy dose of Hüsker Dü and Replacements era Minneapolis. Great songs, savvy players, smart angst. From New Jersey. Catch them now, because this is their last show ever in New York City.
-- MYSPACE / MP3s --> http://myspace.com/theergs

[ THE MEASURE ]
coed punk rock pop from New Brunswick. "Can you bottle exuberance? Just sheer joy? Can it be dabbed behind your ear like a perfume? It sure as hell can be captured on vinyl and The Measure's got its number: über-earnest, let's-get-this-shit-right, dual vocals DIY punk that’s disregarding paint-by-numberisms... Like a supercharged Discount? Like watching otters magically frolic and play instruments? Like the best basement show, glasses fogged, windows steamed? Contagious? Yes, yes, and yes." – Todd Taylor @ Razorcake
-- MYSPACE / MP3s --> http://myspace.com/themeasuresa

[ CARNAL KNOWLEDGE ]
hardcore punk from 4 Brooklyn women. "The riffs are crazy catchy like early-era Reagan Youth with dashes of modern influences I can't put my finger on. They accomplish the ever so difficult task of mid-tempo punk/hardcore without falling victim to boredom. Some of the angriest most heartfelt lyrics I've read from a new band in a long time that touch on a wide variety of subjects ranging from politics to personal relationships. I had the chance to see this band live and they don't disappoint. Don't sleep on this." - Maximum Rocknroll. Their 2nd to last show ever.

NEW NEW NEWS

1. Myself and Cynthia submitted comics to NOT YOUR MOTHER'S MEATLOAF: A Sex Education Comic Book. More information can be found at: sexedcomicproject.blogspot.com. It will be debuting this weekend at the Intersextions Conference at the New School: http://intersextionsconference.eventbrite.com

It's just a preliminary version of the comic, but we're stoked -- and we'll be at the conference Saturday morning for the Everyday Sexism and Modes of Resistance panel/discussion. Afterwards we're heading to Purchase for CULTURE SHOCK, so shout yr girls a holler if you'll be at Purchase College.

2. We also submitted to I Stopped Talking an Hour Ago, a zine about women in punk, compiled by our friends Jes and Megan. I will be finishing the cover art for this within the next week or so, and that'll be available over the summer.

3. My first show playing with Carnal Knowledge is May 13, with Tobi Vail's band, The Old Haunts, and Molly Neuman's band, Love or Perish. It's at the Fort.

4. Cheeky news: we're going to be recording for an Art of the Underground single ASAP. Choke 7"s should be coming soon from Freedom School. We also have a bunch of fun shows coming up, and tour June 4-14 with Screaming Females. Other stuff too, but I don't want to count my eggs before they hatch!

5. Cover show Sunday! 4/20 at 6pm
1410 Lincoln Pl. Crown Heights, Brooklyn

February Happenings

My first trip in February was actually to go see my girls in Carnal Knowledge play a show with Pinhead Gunpowder at 924 Gilman St. It was kind of a big deal, because I haven't been to California since I was like, 6. Also because there was a large migration of NY folks out to this show, and the weather was fantastic. And for other obvious reasons.

Laura, at Thrillhouse. Carnal Knowledge played a show here Saturday night before the Gilman show with Floral Beef, Blonde Ambition, Delay, and Here Comes a Big Black Cloud.

Morgan took us to see a real life pet cemetary in the Presidio, SF! This happened at like 3AM so it was super creepy. This is after we saw sea lions at the pier. It ruled.

The line outside of the Gilman show.

BROOKLYN MEETS BERKELEY

Ironically, Cristy and I ended up staying at the same house, after playing phone tag all week and never actually getting in touch with each other. Then the morning after I arrived there, homegirl showed up at the front door.

This is my girl Sandra's backyard (in Bayview, SF). In case you can't tell, that's a real life orange tree with fresh oranges on it. This photo was taken in FEBRUARY, also. Wait... I live in New York... ?

I kinda promised myself I wouldn't do the "oh awesome boring airplane photos" thing, but because it was my first trip alone across the country, I kinda had to.

Another thing that occured in February was Singuya played their first show with Cheeky, Sleepwall, Halfway to Hell Club and Everything Sucks in Bethpage, LI. Singuya is made up of most of Suicide Fix, plus Janel ripping the mic.

Full speed ahead, March. Cheeky is leaving for another weekend, this time with Slingshot Dakota. Those dudes are leaving for a month and a half, so y'all should check out their tour!

Raining Treats

Come out to Lost & Found this weekend if you're gonna be in Brooklyn! I made this flyer of raining treats, the idea was Jared's. Click to enlarge!
