REVIEW: Bad Habits by Cristy Road

Here's the review I did of Cristy Road's new novel, Bad Habits, for Maximum Rocknroll (issue #308, January 2009).

[UNEDITED]

BAD HABITS

By Cristy Road

224 pages - $14.95

Softskull Press

Cristy Road is infamous for her gender queer, sex positive drawings and her rowdy narratives about the dingy underground. Bad Habits is no exception. This is her second novel, following 2006's Indestructible, with about twice the content – closing in on nearly 200 pages of heavy analogies and gritty illustrations.

Through the protagonist Carmencita, a Cuban-American Miami transplant living in New York, Road weaves a story about surviving in an ever-changing city. Often using the cityscape as a metaphor, she explores the connections between race, class, gender, and madness. Cristy Road's unique voice creates vibrant scenery and equally vibrant characters. Her fluorescent descriptions of the simultaneously tattered, decaying, yet magical atmosphere of New York City evoke likeness to the otherworldly narratives of Francesca Lia Block.

CARNAL KNOWLEDGE ADDED TO D4 SHOW

[poster by Black & Red Eye]

WE JUST GOT ADDED TO THIS SHOW TOMORROW NIGHT!

"mornin New Yorkers...

TONITE is the nite!

DILLINGER 4's record release party @ a brand new venue, the DANBRO STUDIOS WAREHOUSE !

DANBRO is a gorgeous, mid-1800's vintage, raw warehouse space in the East Williamsburg Industrial Park. Shows happen in an ancient, dramatic vaulted room that used to house stores of grain for the building's original incarnation: the Goldenrod Brewery, a once famous Brooklyn brewery that folded after the 1930s due to Prohibition.

Just look for the landmark smokestack that reads "VD 1858" - the bands play next to the base of that stack! Right around the corner from the Montrose L stop.

[ DILLINGER 4 ]
"Dillinger Four is an influential American punk rock band based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Formed in 1994. Current members are Lane "Monkey Hustle" Pederson (drums), Billy Morissette (guitar, vocals), Erik Funk (guitar, vocals), and Patrick "St. Paddy" Costello (bass, vocals.) Funk co-owns the Triple Rock Social Club, a popular bar and music venue in Minneapolis." - Wikipedia
-- MYSPACE / MP3s --> http://myspace.com/dillingerfour

[ THE ERGS ]
grungy pop punk infused with a healthy dose of Hüsker Dü and Replacements era Minneapolis. Great songs, savvy players, smart angst. From New Jersey. Catch them now, because this is their last show ever in New York City.
-- MYSPACE / MP3s --> http://myspace.com/theergs

[ THE MEASURE ]
coed punk rock pop from New Brunswick. "Can you bottle exuberance? Just sheer joy? Can it be dabbed behind your ear like a perfume? It sure as hell can be captured on vinyl and The Measure's got its number: über-earnest, let's-get-this-shit-right, dual vocals DIY punk that’s disregarding paint-by-numberisms... Like a supercharged Discount? Like watching otters magically frolic and play instruments? Like the best basement show, glasses fogged, windows steamed? Contagious? Yes, yes, and yes." – Todd Taylor @ Razorcake
-- MYSPACE / MP3s --> http://myspace.com/themeasuresa

[ CARNAL KNOWLEDGE ]
hardcore punk from 4 Brooklyn women. "The riffs are crazy catchy like early-era Reagan Youth with dashes of modern influences I can't put my finger on. They accomplish the ever so difficult task of mid-tempo punk/hardcore without falling victim to boredom. Some of the angriest most heartfelt lyrics I've read from a new band in a long time that touch on a wide variety of subjects ranging from politics to personal relationships. I had the chance to see this band live and they don't disappoint. Don't sleep on this." - Maximum Rocknroll. Their 2nd to last show ever.

REVIEW: Riot Grrrl: Revolution Girl Style Now!

For Fomentation zine.

RIOT GRRRL: REVOLUTION GIRL STYLE NOW!
Susan Corrigan, Julia Downes, Red Chidgey, Cazz Blase
Black Dog Publishing
http://blackdogonline.com/

When I saw Riot Grrrl: Revolution Girl Style Now! I immediately snatched it up. I opened the cover and scanned the contents. The first essay is titled "Riot Grrrl: The Legacy and Contemporary Landscape of DIY Feminist Cultural Activism." Holy shit. This book has got to be about everything that is exciting and vital to me.

As an outsider to riot grrrl, but participant in DIY feminist cultural activism, I found Riot Grrrl to be a profound historical document. For one, it is not canonical. Riot Grrrl starts with the movement's US roots and quickly brings us overseas to observe, in great depth, the British riot grrrl scene which I actually didn't know much about, aside from the legendary Huggy Bear. The essays range from meticulous accounts of what seems like every single British riot grrrl band and zine, to the cultural significance of grrrl zines, to just how, when, and where riot grrrl began.

PUNK AS PARADOX

I wrote this back in April and submitted it to the I Stopped Talking an Hour Ago zine (which will be availabe at this Saturday's Big She-Bang! - http://myspace.com/thebig_shebang). I re-edited it and have just submitted it to Scene not Heard, which is due out at some point next year.

punk as paradox

To begin with, punk is a paradox. It simultaneously represents the best thing that ever happened to me, and the worst. It gives girls and women like me the chance to reclaim our voices, yet it silences us as much as the white, male, hetero-dominated mainstream culture. This could be because punk does not exist in a bubble, it exists within the patriarchy; therefore, it reproduces the patriarchy.

I've Got A Proposition, Goes Something Like This: A Brief Herstory of The Big She-Bang

Beth and I have been working on this for weeks now. I think this is the final copy which will be going in the Big She-Bang zine. [Poster by No Guts No Glory]

I've Got a Proposition, Goes Something Like This:
A Brief Herstory of The Big She-Bang

by Beth Puma and Kate Wadkins

In late 2003 there had been many rumblings of the girls and women in the Long Island DIY punk and activist community wanting to organize on their own. Modern Times Collective had been around for years, ideas for Freespace were quickly developing, and the Freewheel Bike Collective had really taken off. A lot of folks were engaged in a variety of projects at this time, ranging from animal rights to various social justice groups. The younger women involved in the community wanted to organize in a more direct way, to deal not only with all of the social justice issues they were fighting for, but for their own space in this creative and active community.

A small group of girls decided that they wanted to focus on self-taught, skill-share workshops as a stepping stone to self-empowerment. They began with a series of skill-shares on knitting/crocheting, playing guitar and bass, silkscreening, and bike maintenance, among others. They met in each other's houses and in Argyle Park, Babylon. As with many other feminist collectives, their shared experience with their immediate community brought about common frustrations. Similar to consciousness-raising groups of the 70's and riot grrrl meetings of the 90's, they started to work from their own experience, and identify the sexism they experienced on an every day level in their surrounding community. These women named their group the Long Island Womyn’s Collective (LIWC).

TOUR PHOTOS: Carolinas back to NY

The final installment is here!
Sullivan Island, outside of Charleston, SC:

Greenville, NC:

Schleyer does stand-up on the sly.

The Screamales from above the Spazzatorium:

Richmond, VA with Adrienne's awesome dog Mable:

And finally, a portrait of Schleyer, post a drive from DC to New Brunswick, post stopping for 3/$1.00 pretzels in Philly, PA. So when do we get to go again?

TOUR PHOTOS: Florida

As per Marissa's request, tour photos, installment 3.

Gainesville:

Brian and King Mike air guitar battling.

Orlando:

Okay, I know this picture kind of sucks but it needs some explaining. This is outside of the Black Box Collective in Orlando. There were a bunch of kids spraypainting the buildings in the area, in plain sight during the day. When we arrived here, there was also an accidental? bonfire in the field in the back. The fire department came, and upon seeing the kids doing grafitti didn't stop them, rather, the firefighters went over and hung out with them. They also came into the show and apparently loved Screaming Females.

So basically, the photo is of one of the firefighters getting his uniform jacket spraypainted by one of the kids. And King Mike chatting with them.

My parents have a timeshare in Orlando and they booked us to stay there for one night. We could not deal.

MIKE GOT TO RIDE A SEGWAY.

TOUR PHOTOS: NC to GA

So now it's time for tour installment part II. Starting with Chapel Hill and Carrboro, NC.

A secret pool in or near Carrboro. ADULTS SHOULD NOT SWIM ALONE.

We found this amazing lake off of Route 85 on our way from South Carolina to Georgia.

Then we made our way to The Hangar in Athens, GA.

Marissa gave King Mike a stick n' poke of the Screaming Females van.

The king and his castle.
