The Booklyn Art Gallery is pleased to present BRASS IN POCKET, a group exhibition featuring work by Susan Fang, Liz Linden, Lynnette Miranda, Caroline Paquita, Catherine Stack, and Tamara Waite-Santibanez, and Book Swap… a collaborative project by Liz Linden and Jen Kennedy.

We approached this show with the desire to represent contemporary feminist artists working in different media with the commonality of transcending subject matter and traditional techniques in print, collage, drawing and sculpture. Instead, BRASS IN POCKET is a group of New York-based women artists who are doing just that, but whose work may not necessarily be described as “feminist art.”

What we discovered through this process is that it is less of a “feminist” concern to narrowly define this work as “feminist art.” It is more important to bring the work, the pushing of boundaries and mediums, to light. Throughout our studio visits feminist themes emerged. ZINES + PRESS

BRAIN WAVES is the current cover photo on the Recession Art website, an unexpected surprise! And news to us is that one of our zines (Caroline Paquita's Womanimalistic) is featured as a feminist lit pick for the upcoming show at Recession Art CultureFix, Still Figuring it Out: a feminist coming of age, curated by RAC's own Ana Cecilia Alvarez. Which is exciting.

Additionally, The Wall Street Journal interviewed me about zine culture, as well as the Brooklyn College Library Zine Collection's grand unveiling last Tuesday, with the debut of Fold, Staple, Share. My comments didn't make it into the article, but For the Birds' zine So You Want to Start a Feminist Collective... did grace the cover of the Greater New York section.

At the Fold, Staple, Share opening, I read a newly edited version of "This is a Thank You Song," which originated as a piece on this blog. I plan on sharing the new version of that article here soon, as it focuses even more on the idea of creating safer spaces.

IN ZINE-ING AROUND

I am leaving momentarily to table with For the Birds Collective at the Brooklyn Zine Fest. International Girl Gang Underground is in tow!

The zine is also on display at the Essential Hues Zine Library. Essential Hues, a group show organized by Caroline Paquita at Brooklyn Wayfarers, opened Friday night. The show features work by Adee Roberson, Anna Luisa, Caitlin Sweet, Sam Lopes and the brilliant Caroline herself. It is one of my favorite things I've seen all year so I highly recommend it. Head on over, see some art and leaf through some zines. Keep your ears out for a possible reading event in conjunction with the show, which closes May 13.
