The Booklyn Art Gallery is pleased to present BRASS IN POCKET, a group exhibition featuring work by Susan Fang, Liz Linden, Lynnette Miranda, Caroline Paquita, Catherine Stack, and Tamara Waite-Santibanez, and Book Swap… a collaborative project by Liz Linden and Jen Kennedy.

We approached this show with the desire to represent contemporary feminist artists working in different media with the commonality of transcending subject matter and traditional techniques in print, collage, drawing and sculpture. Instead, BRASS IN POCKET is a group of New York-based women artists who are doing just that, but whose work may not necessarily be described as “feminist art.”

What we discovered through this process is that it is less of a “feminist” concern to narrowly define this work as “feminist art.” It is more important to bring the work, the pushing of boundaries and mediums, to light. Throughout our studio visits feminist themes emerged. For the most recent show at Booklyn Artists Alliance, Stones in Your Pocket, UK collaborative printmaking group the Cardiff Sessions presented recent lithography work. While the show was only up for three days, the Cardiff Sessions also held a collaborative printmaking and drawing workshop on April 7, with New York artists handpicked by Booklyn's Gallery Director, Aimee Lusty. I was super excited to be one of the artists invited to participate, along with Aimee herself and a few other Brooklyn artists and friends I admire.

More about the Cardiff Sessions and the workshop:

Founded in 2009 the Cardiff Sessions is an artist collective dedicated to producing collaborative work through experimental drawing and stone lithography. The collective's aim is to develop relationships with international artists and explore the visual language of printmaking through collaboration while advancing experimentation in contemporary printmaking within Wales...

Coinciding with this exhibition Booklyn Artists Alliance and the Cardiff Sessions will produce a new series of collaborative linocut prints. These collaborations will be on view from April 9 - 29.

We started the day off making drawings that were passed around to at least 4 artists apiece. Afterwards, we each made linocuts and collaborated on the printing process, in effect making one-of-a-kind monoprints. For the last leg, we placed all of the linocuts together and made unique markings before printing, resulting in 4 large prints. The collaborations made in the Cardiff Sessions workshop will be on view at Booklyn Artists Alliance, 37 Greenpoint Avenue Floor 4, Brooklyn, NY, through April 29.

NORTHSIDE OPEN STUDIOS: "PRESENTS" + BRAIN WAVES

After an eventful Bushwick Open Studios the other week, today commences Northside Open Studios, a festival of art shows, artists' open studios, and events in North Brooklyn.

I've been working with Hrag Vartanian to co-curate Presents: Three Months of Mail Art for Hyperallergic HQ, a show of over 100 artists and widely varying mediums, that will debut tomorrow, Friday June 17, at Hyperallergic HQ. I am thrilled about the opening as I've been writing for Hyperallergic on the subject and living/working among these entries for a month now. L Magazine named the show a "must-see event" during Northside Open Studios. For more information, check out Hyperallergic.

Aimee Lusty, newly-named curator at Booklyn will be hosting a zine and print fair on the street below Booklyn's own space in Greenpoint. Aimee is one of my favorite local art-makers and creative idea-havers so I am excited to see what she comes up with for Booklyn. She recently debuted MASTER OF REALITY, a group show featuring Milano Chow, Cynthia Daignault, Gary Kachadourian and STO, which will also have open hours during the zine and print fair. BRAIN WAVES, Storefront's zine and print collection (as well as my curatorial baby) will be tabling during the fair, along with For the Birds' own Lauren Denitzio. LAST NIGHT OUT-OF-TOWN

So The Sketchbook Project Volume 3 finally calls it quits tonight after a semi-national tour. Tonight is the opening party for FROM SCRATCH, which is a show I guess I'm technically in. Funny how that works. Here is the info from Shane and Steven of Art House Co-op:

Tonight is the final exhibition for The Sketchbook Project Volume 3. It is hosted at Chicago Art Source Gallery in Chicago, IL. The opening is from 6:00-9:00pm. The exhibition will be on display through June 20th.

As much as I was pretty removed from this project and its 2,784 other artists, I did get to check out the whole thing at 3rd Ward in Brooklyn and it was a pretty great event. If you're in Chicago, you should definitely check it out!

Another note: my dear friend Aimee Lusty - whom I used to live with and majorly helped smooth out my senior thesis ideas (all while laying down some serious Darger knowledge) - has JUST BEGUN blogging for the Marcel Duchamp World Community online. I think it's pretty rad. Congrats Aimee!
